5 THINGS THAT CAN KILL YOUR CAREER

While I can keep the list going, these are the most common 5 career mistakes that I see all the time.

Consequentially, people who fail to get rid of these mistakes are often the ones to make loud remarks about their career dissatisfaction. They blame it on "bad" leadership and "bad" policies, and end up struggling in their professional and personal lives.

Their frustration and discontent tend to overshadow their potential for growth and success, making it challenging to break free from the cycle of stagnation and unfulfillment.

Don't fall into the same trap.

(1) Ego

Why:

  • Leads to arrogance

  • Leads to inability to collaborate effectively with others

  • Blinds you to your weaknesses, limitations, mistakes, or gaps in knowledge

  • Hinders personal & professional growth

  • Makes you unlikable to work with

This is my personal favorite. It's something I used to struggle with in my early career and is unfortunately overwhelmingly present in any creative industry. The best advice is simple: just let it go.

(2) Fear of Change

Why:

  • Leads to career stagnation

  • Prevents you from seizing new opportunities

  • Prevents you from growing and developing personally & professionally

  • Reduces your adaptability, which is vital to any profession

  • Leads to stress-related health issues (just like any fear)

Change is the only constant. It is inevitable in most professions, so the only way to survive it is to make it work in your favor.

(3) Being Lazy

Why:

  • Leads to subpar career and, therefore, quality of life

  • Damages your reputation/credibility

  • Leads to self-inflicted stress

  • Erodes your skills overtime

  • Leads to unemployment (eventually)

Lazy people are normally entitled to the thought that everything should be handed to them while they don't put in the necessary effort AND avoid taking responsibility for their actions. Nobody can help you here but yourself.

(4) Failure to Set Goals

Why:

  • Leads to aimless career drifting

  • Diminishes your value in the job market

  • Leaves you dissatisfied with your career and life

  • Leaves you without a sense of purpose, which affects your mental health

  • Leads to stress

While setting your career goals, make sure to set deadlines as well. This will make you take action, track your progress regularly, and hold yourself accountable.

(5) Lack of Networking

Why:

  • Limits your access to new opportunities

  • Limits your access to industry insights

  • Limits your access to resources such as advices, recommendations, referrals

  • Limits your ability to make informed decisions

  • Erodes self-confidence by leaving you in a vacuum

True power is in partnerships and the ability to work together. Building and maintaining a strong professional network is an investment in your career's long-term sustainability and success.
